Waiting for the 1st bell to ring this morning, I sat with the Jr. Scouts and read some posted items from our schools' 5th graders. Seems they're learning about the Constitution, and these posted essays in particular were about the Constitution's preamble.
Each student was supposed to pick one piece of the preamble, analyze what it meant in modern terms, and then give a modern-day example.
Here's the one that stuck with me:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union...provide for the common defence....
The student wrote that this means that "we need a military force to protect our country from being attacked by other countries."
The student went on to write this (my itals added):
A modern-day example of this is Iraq.
Huh. I'm probably late in saying this, but I wasn't aware that Iraq was anywhere near capable of attacking the US.
Can only hope that the teacher, or the student's parents, helped clarify things for this kid.
And if so...maybe for the rest of the country?
Oh, I'll bet you can rest assured that nothing got clarified that day.
But that's Ok.
The last thing this country needs is a bunch of enlightened people running around with clear heads.
Our entire economy would collapse!
...
[McLovin comes back from the dark place]
Wow, that kid did a great job!! And I'm sure everyone explained about how Iraq couldn't possibly attack us so there's really nothing to worry about in that regard.
